iSpoil – A New iPhone Application Promotes Responsible Food Conservation
IOTO Corporation is proud to announce the release and immediate availability of iSpoil for the iPhone and iPod touch via the iTunes App Store. The purpose of iSpoil is to promote responsible food conservation. The iSpoil application is a large database of foods and beverages, broken up into categories, that allow the user to select the foods they’ve purchased, input the expiration date, and then choose when they would like to be notified that their food is expiring.
“According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Loss Project, we throw away more than 25%, some 25.9 million tons, of all the food we produce for domestic sale and consumption” (E – The Environmental Magazine, 2010). Additionally, a lead researcher with a 2004 University of Arizona study estimates that a family of four tosses out $590 per year in meat, fruits, vegetables, and grain products alone. iSpoil is designed to help fight this trend. Along with helping to inform the user of expiring food in their home, this application will help to make them aware of the amount of food and money that they are wasting.
