Steve Jobs, the man who revolutionised modern life, dies at age of 56

UPDATE 9pm: STEVE Jobs, the man who co-founded Apple and revolutionised modern-day life with inventions like the iPhone, iPod and the iPad, has died at the age of 56 following years of ill-health.

Mr Jobs had suffered a number of health problems, including pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant, but the exact cause of his death was not revealed.

Apple fans, his co-workers and his tech rivals paid tribute to Mr Jobs, labeling him a "creative genius" and an "inspiring mentor" and saying his impact "will be felt for many generations to come".

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter lit up with tributes, with #RIPSteveJobs and #ThankYouSteve quickly becoming the top worldwide trending topics on the latter.

Many said they learned of his death while using a device Mr Jobs invented, a point made by US President Barack Obama in his tribute.

Mr Obama said Mr Jobs "exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity", in a statement issued by the White House.

"He transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world," Mr Obama said.

"The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.

"Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him."

As news of his death broke, Apple.com's homepage was changed to a simple black-and-white photo of Mr Jobs in his trademark black turtleneck and small round glasses, with the caption "Steve Jobs, 1955-2011".

Apple, the company Mr Jobs co-founded with Steve Wozniak in 1976, posted a tribute message on its website and called on fans to share their "thoughts, memories, and condolences" by emailing them at rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Jailbreaking iOS 5: Apple determined to stop; we optimist

With the iOS 5, Apple looks to be determined than ever to prevent jailbreaking of its latest operating system; but already jailbreak champions have start working to break the-yet-to-released iOS.

Remember the initial hours of iOS 4 releases and jailbreak: Would history repeat itself?

Well, iPhone Jailbreak is never illegal — it just allows us some extra bit of control on the iOS file system, literally going to its roots and make changes as per our choice and wish. But, Apple is vehemently against the idea — failing to win in court they are trying to ‘stop’ jailbreaking by means of technology. With all the patches and updates, Apple is making lives difficult for the jailbreak community. Not only the Apple guys try to eradicate bugs, they do almost everything to stop jailbreaking.

But who cares? If Apple can churn out developed versions, so can the jailbreak community. Remember 21st June, 2010; when Apple officially launched iOS 4.0 much to the admiration and bow of the tech-world. But, what happened few hours later was even more amazing — iPhone Dev Team released an update of the Redsn0w enabling to jailbreak even iOS 4.0. This was followed suit by Sn0wbreez and PwnageTool, completing the circle in jailbreaking all iOS 4.0 run iPod Touches and iPhones alongside iPads running iOS 3.2.

We are expecting a similar incident, if not better. It’s like an oath to the jailbreak community to jailbreak each and every update in iOS that Apple releases.

iOS 4 updates: Almost all are jailbroken within days of release

The jailbreak community is now busy with jailbreaking all the latest upgrades, that Apple are coming up with from time to time. Say for example, in the first week of July JailBreakMe 3.0 was released powerful enough to jailbreak all iDevices running iOS 4.3.3. Just ten days after, Apple releases iOS 4.3.4 to fix the ‘bug’ to prevent the JailBreakMe 3.0 exploit. Interestingly, within 12 hours of the release, iPhone Dev Team came up with the rabbit from the hat — they jailbroke (tethered though) the iOS 4.3.4 version with updated version of Redsn0w and Pwange. Even the latest iOS 4.3.5 version can still be jailbroken by the tethered Redsn0w jailbreak — something Apple developers are yet to ‘fix.’

iPhone 5: How many days before we have a complete jailbreak

We perceive this as a rat-race; a race between Apple releasing latest updates and the tenacity of the Jailbreak community to ‘break’ into it. Going by the success rate and effort by the Jailbreakers, it won’t be a long wait to have our first jaibroken iPhone 5.

Till now Apple has released beta versions of iOS 5.0, followed by a second beta, mainly for the developers. Just within a day of the release of iOS 5.0 first beta, jailbreaker (we prefer to avoid the term hacker) MuscleNerd breaks into the root. Apple later release iOS 5 second beta, fixing thousands of bugs and patches and negating most of the jailbreak efforts. But, jailbreak community perhaps loves the challenge — Sn0wbreeze 2.8b3 updated to support tethered jailbreak. RedSn0w and JailBreakMe are also working in tandem to follow suit and we believe it would succeed in near future.

So, what we can expect when the iOS 5 hits the official release? We can foresee a lot of cheers and adoration from Apple fans and sleepless work-fill nights for the Jailbreak community. Frankly speaking, it won’t be long that iOS 5 is also jailbroken just like its predecessors. Who knows, it may be jailbroken within a day of the release!

iPhone 5 rumoured to have aluminium rear and A5 processor

Apple has placed an order for a monster 15 million iPhone 5s, and is on track to start shipping the hotly anticipated handset in September, according to DigiTimes.

Needless to say, Apple hasn't issued an official statement regarding the newest iteration of the iPhone -- we don't even know what it's going to be called officially. But Taiwan-based tech manufacturer and proud owner of an excellent company name Pegatron has won the contract to build the phones, taking the massive order from the House of Jobs.

DigiTimes' sources said that the iPhone 5 would be largely similar to the iPhone 4, which means it could be officially named the iPhone 4S, in keeping with past iPhone naming conventions.

If true, that's rather disappointing -- we're keeping our fingers crossed for a radically revamped iPhone, just to mix things up. Still, DigiTimes' report matches other whisperings we've heard about the design, which is rumoured to be largely unchanged.

Fifteen million units sounds like a great deal -- and it is. Apple is traditionally a little tight on the orders to start with, and then ramps up production once its gadgets are on sale. Of course, it never hurts if Apple can say a new gadget sold out on launch day.

Bolt Creative has today announced the imminent release of the 40th Pocket God episode, Battle of the Gods, which has the accolade of having more updates than any other game in the App Store. This latest episode is also the largest Pocket God content expansion to date, and invites the player to use up to four of the God Idols that were introduced in Episode 39 in a showdown against one of 40 gods on God Island, also introduced in Episode 39. Each God Idol has a different attack - Fast, Counter, or Strong - and each idol also has its own weakness based on its attack, with Fast beating Strong, Strong beating Counter, and Counter beating Fast. Cupertino Council Releases New Renders and Plans From Apple’s Space Ship Campus

AppleInsider reports that the City of Cupertino has just posted a whole host of documents, plans and stunning renderings from Apple’s bid to build a 2.8 million square-foot campus in Cupertino. The amazing-looking building has already been dubbed “The Spaceship”, because it looks like one, of course! Going by these plans, the structure, when completed, is going to be simply awe-inspiring. Cupertino Council is in the middle of reviewing the plans, and according to AppleInsider, is currently assessing the environmental impact that might be caused by the building, including the effects on traffic, noise, and air quality. The newly released plans reveal many fascinating facts about the building, which will be called “Apple Campus 2”. For example, according to AppleInsider, it will be four stories high, and will feature a Corporate Auditorium with capacity to seat 1,000 people, as well as new Research Facilities spread out over 300,000 square feet. The building is intended to support a workforce of up to 13,000 employees, and will possibly have its own on-site Central Plant to save draining the city’s electricity power grid. New Report Claims Pegatron to Ship iPhone 5 Handsets to Apple in September

According to a new report released Wednesday by DigiTimes, Pegatron will start shipping the new iPhone 5 handset to Apple in September. According to industry sources quoted in the report, Pegatron will move up to become the secondary original design manufacturer (or ‘ODM’) for the iPhone, with orders totaling 10 million units of Apple’s fifth-generation handset.

Other sources quoted in the report stated that Pegatron is moving to try to earn more work from Apple. Since Pegatron’s margins on iPhone handsets are “relatively small”, the company has retooled factories and trained up staff to try to earn some of Apple’s iPad and MacBook manufacturing business. The report indicates that Foxconn has worked with Apple to ensure that their relationship is strong and that the orders for Apple’s wildly selling iPhone and iPad models continue to come to Foxconn as the primary manufacturer.

Just a few weeks ago, DigiTimes released a report claiming that Pegatron had received an order from Apple for up to 15 million units of the iPhone 5. The most recent report reduced that number from 15 to 10 million handsets, which some may recall was the figure claimed by reports back in late January. As Pegatron is a very experienced manufacturing partner and has worked with major volumes in the past, hitting this 10 million mark likely won’t present too much of a challenge.

As we move closer to the expected launch and release dates for Apple’s next-generation iPhone handset, rumors and speculation abound about when the handset will actually end up in the hands of consumers. This week saw Canadian carrier Telus report that the iPhone 5 will launch in early October, a report backed up by All Things D; this news contradicts reports by China Times and many others that have indicated that Apple intends to release the next iPhone as early as September 6^th. A September launch window was also proposed by Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, with Abramsky stating that build data information that he had obtained from some of Apple’s suppliers has indicated a September launch.

One thing is clear – the launch of the next iPhone is getting close. Another report earlier this week stated that Apple had begun shipping the device to its many carrier partners for final testing. The handsets were shipped to the carriers locked and secured to ensure that no one got so much as a glimpse of what the next iPhone has in store for the many millions of consumers waiting on its release.

According to Shaw Wu, analyst with Sterne Agee, those waiting for the iPhone 5 could end up getting a “bigger upgrade than expected”. Wu claims that the next iPhone will ship with a thinner, lighter design, a larger screen, and the dual-core A5 processor that’s currently found powering the iPad 2. Wu continued that users should expect the iPhone 5 to have the same general form factor as the iPhone 4, but with a thinner bezel and most certainly a fix to the antenna issues that plagued the older handset. An upgraded rear camera is likely as well, taking the camera to 8 megapixels in resolution. What’s not expected is a ‘4G’ LTE radio, which likely won’t be found in an iPhone until the next models are released sometime in 2012.

As expected, Apple did not comment on any of this week’s news.

AT&T Readying the Troops for a Mid-September iPhone 5 Launch

According to a report published today on Boy Genius Report, Apple’s major US carrier partner AT&T is getting its staff prepped for the release of the next iPhone handset, expected sometime in mid-September. The report cites a ‘proven source’ that claims that AT&T’s retail arm has been communicating with its legions of employees, telling them to “finish training in order to have employees available for the influx of foot traffic expected in September.”

While this report is simply another rumor, there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind at this point that September will bring some sort of new or updated iPhone handset; it’s even possible that Apple will completely revamp its lineup and launch more than one new iPhone. The BGR report claims that Apple will announce the next iPhone sometime in late August, and then handset will then go on sale in early September. The site has a decent track record in regards to Apple and iPhone related rumors, and has numerous contacts deep in the wireless industry.

The BGR report coincides with the release of further speculation on the launch date from MacRumors, which recently stated that Apple has started contacting some of its former retail employees to see if they will return to work part-time between mid-August and mid-September. Since this timeframe also happens to be the lucrative ‘back to school’ retail extravaganza, it’s possible that Apple just wants its stores fully staffed to avoid any sales or service issues. However, it’s also possible that this is in preparation for the flood of customers expected with the launch of the next iPhone.

Most sources to date have placed the highly-anticipated iPhone 5 launch as occurring sometime this fall, ushered in with the launch of iOS 5, the newest version of the operating system powering the iPhone and iPad. Apple further hinted at this on their 2^nd quarter earnings call last week, with CFO Peter Oppenheimer stating that Apple will have a “future product transition” that will “have a material impact on the September quarter”.

At this point, it appears to be all-systems-go for the next iPhone to hit shortly. Recent reports have claimed that Apple’s supply chain and manufacturing partners have all been preparing for production of the next iPhone, and while today’s report claims a mid-September launch window, rumors have speculated that the iPhone 5 could launch anytime from the end of August through the end of October. Regardless of when it comes, there’s little doubt that the handset will be a huge blockbuster for Apple.

Some reports have claimed that the next-generation iPhone will be both lighter in weight and sport a thinner profile than the iPhone 4, and perhaps will feature an upgraded rear camera, and possibly a larger display. The Wall Street Journal claims that the iPhone will contain new wireless chipsets manufactured by Qualcomm, which may make a single iPhone 5 handset compatible with GSM and CDMA networks around the world.

As for Apple, the company didn’t comment on the latest report, and has kept mum in regards to the next iPhone handset. Those in Cupertino did state that the company plans on manufacturing upwards of 25 million handsets through the end of 2011; to get this many out the door, the handset will need to launch within the next couple of months. For now, it’s simply a game of ‘wait and see’.

Verizon’s Comments Suggest Apple is Keeping its iPhone Partners in the Dark

Speaking with CNBC this past week, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam commented that Verizon executives believed that Apple was going to release the next iPhone handset sometime around June or July, as it had with previous iPhone models. This news, coming from the incoming Chief Executive of one of Apple’s largest carrier partners, would suggest that Apple has been keeping quiet about its iPhone development and release plans – even with partners that move millions of handsets each year.

During its quarterly conference call to discuss the company’s earnings and guidance, McAdam stated that Verizon “had assumed that we would see an iPhone early in the summertime as it’s been usually, and that’s going to be a little bit later in the year now.” Rumors and speculation have abounded regarding the next iPhone handset – the iPhone 4S, or the iPhone 5 depending on whom you believe – with the launch expected to happen sometime in September. McAdam unfortunately didn’t offer any information in the way of dates.

The earnings call also shed some light on Verizon’s plans going forward, with McAdam taking over the reins as CEO from incumbent Ivan Seidenberg. Seidenberg will stay with Verizon, moving to the Chairman position. The company spoke freely about its iPhone sales figures, noting that in the 2^nd calendar quarter of 2011 Verizon sold 2.4 million iPhone 4 handsets, which is about 1.3 million fewer than competitor AT&T activated over the same period.

Verizon joined up with Apple to start selling iOS devices late in 2010, a relationship which started by Verizon selling the iPad and then moving to an iPhone 4 model which had seemingly been developed just for them, utilizing the company’s CDMA technology. Since Verizon joined Apple’s family of iPhone carriers, the network has sold millions of iPhone, iPad and iPad 2 devices.

Much to Apple’s chagrin, however, Verizon has also been the source of numerous iPhone and iPad related leaks. When Verizon first started carrying the iPhone 4, Chief Financial Officer Francis Shammo commented to Bloomberg that Verizon would soon start selling a new iPad model that had a Verizon-compatible CDMA radio. Shortly after, the iPad 2 was announced and it was confirmed that Verizon customers would be able to purchase a 3G model that used Verizon’s cellular data network.

Shammo was also the source of speculation that Apple’s next iPhone handset would be “world phone” compatible, having compatibility with both GSM and CDMA networks at many different frequencies. This would allow Apple to avoid having to manufacture separate devices for Verizon and AT&T, and would give its customers greater flexibility when traveling. It’s unclear as of yet whether this move – which makes sense for Apple – is expected to occur with the iPhone handset seemingly launching in September.

As expected, Apple’s spokespeople did not comment on McAdam’s report.

iOS 5 Beta 3 Adds Gestures that Replace Hardware Buttons

Apple has released the newest beta of their upcoming iOS 5 mobile operating system, and one of the quickly discovered new features is a gesture interface that provides the same functionality as the iPhone and iPad’s hardware buttons.

Listed under the Accessibility settings in the device’s setup area, the new “Assistive Touch” option places a floating button on the screen which allows users to use touch gestures to complete a variety of commands, including returning to the home screen, multitasking, changing the device’s volume and more. While it appears that Assistive Touch is targeted at those who have difficulty with hardware buttons, the feature appearing in this way has signaled to many that Apple is considering dropping hardware buttons in future devices.

There are some gaps in the Assistive Touch software, as would be expected from a beta release. It’s possible to create and save custom gestures for the interface, but as of yet there appears to be no way to actually assign it to do anything. The rest of the interface appears to be working perfectly, however, as users can make use of the Assistive Touch menu system to access four options: Home, Device, Gestures and Favorites.

The “Home” option does exactly what it sounds like, returning the user to the iPhone or iPad’s home screen – similar in function to the hardware button. “Device” offers a multitude of different controls, including those to lock the screen, to change the volume, a button that performs a “shake” of the device, and another to rotate the screen’s orientation. The “Gestures” menu shows options for three, four and five-fingered gestures, which have been popping up in the iPad 2 betas for iOS 5 and are expected to be coming to the device when iOS 5 is officially released. Finally, “Favorites” allows access to custom, saved gestures as well as a handful of other ones such as “pinch” and “swipe”.

Customers of Apple’s devices who may struggle with some or all of the hardware gestures – think elderly users and the “shake” function on an iPad – are likely to be very happy with the company’s implementation of these resources in iOS 5. While the rumor mill is likely to use Assistive Touch as Apple’s means to finally rid their devices of hardware buttons, there’s been no indication from the company that they ever plan to do so, and a great deal of users would be frustrated with the inability to adjust things like an iPhone’s volume without taking the device out of their pocket and accessing the screen. Assistive Touch does show that Apple is paying attention to its customer space, and that they have the skills to produce software interfaces that could eliminate hardware buttons in the future if that’s what the market dictates.

It’s tough to imagine a button-less iPod or iPhone, but this could be relatively feasible for the iPad which is screen-centric and virtually everything is done via the display. Only time will tell if Apple decides to eliminate hardware buttons entirely.

Apple to build 25 Million iPhone 5 Handsets in 2011

As the launch of its next-generation iPhone handset nears, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is gearing up to ship a record amount of iPhones to close out the 2011 year with a bang. Apple has been placing huge orders for the necessary components to make the next iPhone, and with the hype and media frenzy continuing to develop at full steam the product is expected to sell very well.

WSJ cited sources inside of Apple’s supply chain that the company is being very aggressive with its build strategies for the new iPhone, and has directed its manufacturers to expect orders totaling 25 million units over the coming months. The report claims that unless Foxconn can improve its yields, Apple will be unable to meet such a lofty goal. Insiders have claimed that the iPhone 5 is both “complicated” and “difficult to assemble”.

The report also rumored that the next iPhone will include new models of a wireless baseband chip developed by Qualcomm, which will be replacing the iPhone 4’s chips which were provided by Infineon. It’s been widely suspected that Apple will be moving to a “world phone” chipset with the next iPhone, enabling use on both GSM and CDMA networks across the globe and simplifying the number of models that Apple needs to develop. TheWSJ report didn’t provide any indication if this Qualcomm chip would be “world phone” capable.

The report also stated that the iPhone 5 will be both lighter and thinner than the iPhone 4, but didn’t commit to any speculation regarding a change in design. Just a couple of weeks ago ThisIsMyNext claimed that the iPhone 5 would be a radical design departure from the iPhone 4, and other recent rumors have claimed that the love for the iPhone 4’s design is all but gone from the company’s executive team.

If the report is accurate, then Apple’s large component orders would put the iPhone 5 on track to hit its rumored third-quarter release date. Apparently, suppliers have been quoted as planning to ship their final hardware to Foxconn no later than early August so that final assembly of the handsets can begin. Apple shipped more than 18 million iPhones in its last quarter, so a 25 million unit prediction would indicate that Cupertino expects the iPhone 5 to be a blockbuster.

Apple had no comment on the report, and has kept tight-lipped regarding the next iPhone handset. As the days tick off to September, expect the rumor mill to keep turning.
