If you're a jailbreaker and love customising your iDevice, spending hours installing your favourite Cydia apps, applying your favourite theme and installing other packages from Cydia, then you'll know the agonising frustration that comes about when you hear that a new iOS upgrade has been released by Apple.
Why agonising? Well, if you want that fancy new feature only available in the next firmware upgrade, you're going to have to lose your jailbreak and then re-jailbreak and set up your iDevice all over again. Well fear not, as there is a backup utility available from Cydia, called PkgBackup.
As the name implies, the application developed by Jibril Gueye backs up your selected installed packages. All you have to do is install the commercial app from Cydia, and load it up. The app takes a little while to load up since it needs to scan all your installed packages and then presents a simple screen where you can set which packages you would like to back up, including your Springboard layout (requires SBOrganizer) and Categories (requires Categories).
Restoring is a simple case of hitting the 'Restore' button.
PkgBackup even lets you share your backup via email, and you can also connect via Facebook and Twitter.
For a comprehensive user guide, just click on the lifebelt icon in the bottom right hand corner. This takes you to the PkgBackup help page on the developers site.
PkgBackup is available from Cydia for USD4.99.
