If you're a finding that the default Apple messaging application falls a little short of your requirements, take a look at biteSMS. One of two major players in the jailbreak SMS app genre, biteSMS is a feature rich messaging application.
The app can replace Apple's SMS app for all SMS functions including receiving, replying and composing new messages. It's highly configurable and as such you can set up how you want the app to deal with incoming messages with different behaviour depending on whether you're on the lock screen or home screen.
Additionally the app lets you reply quickly to any messages no matter if you are browsing in safari or reading an article in your RSS feeds application or taking a phone call! The same is true for quick composing or calling back the contact from whom you received the message.

Another feature of biteSMS is the functionality to send messages over the biteSMS network. You will need to purchase credits for this, but the service can come in useful for example if you are abroad and want to avoid the extortionate charges of your home carrier. If you have a limited number of inclusive SMSs on your carrier plan, biteSMS can also help you monitor this with it's built in counter.
The application icon leaves a little to be desired with it's bright pink colour but the functionality of the app pretty much compensates for this!
