Improve iOS 4 performance on iPhone 3G

Most iPhone owners who upgraded their iPhone 3G with the iOS 4 have very frustrating comments regarding the result. Numerous comments in Apple’s Tech Support all point to the fact that many are not happy with their upgrade.

Most of the comments in the said forum suggest that the upgrade to iOS 4 greatly slowed down a lot of features. The 3G’s performance has become poor to the point of frustration.

For those of you who have not downgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.3 to fix the problem, you can try turning off the Spotlight to make your iPhone 3G perform at an acceptable rate.

Go to Settings > General > Home > Spotlight Search and choose the option to turn everything off. With Spotlight off, your iPhone 3G becomes a usable device again.

Now, combine this with a Double Hard Reset (DHR) by pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons on your iPhone simultaneously for 5 to 10 seconds.

Ignore the Slide to Power Off notice that appears after a few seconds, and keep holding down both buttons. The device should abruptly turn off afterwards, and you’ll see the Apple logo and a reboot. Now release the buttons.

Wait for about 15 seconds before turning on your phone by pressing the Sleep/Wake button. It may be necessary to do this procedure twice to get the desired effect.

Just a note… Spotlight is a search feature that eases the problem of finding things on your iPhone. It has a search box with a keyboard where you can type queries such as: Application’s by first, last or company name; Mail by to, from and subject lines; Calendar items by event titles, invitees, and locations, among others.
